There are a variety of cigar accessories out there, but one of the most important is your cigar cutter. To help you find the best matched cutter for your personal use, we have put together short descriptions of the different types available.

The Straight Cigar Cutters - The cigar cutter that makes basic straight cut, is the single blade guillotine. The double blade guillotine makes a cleaner cut and is preferred by many seasoned cigar smokers. Cigar scissors are also used to make straight cuts, which may be the best choice for cutting a cigar at the exact spot you want. But, the guillotine is the most practical, and is typically the least expensive, as well as the ability to safely carry in the pocket.

Wedge Cutters or "V" cutters resemble a guillotine cutter, but the shape of the blade slices a wedge into the cap of the cigar instead of cutting it off. Designed to slice from one side, at the exact depth, you will not cut to deep.

You can use a Cigar Hole Punch to put a hole in the cap of the cigar, instead of cutting of the cap of the cigar. But, be careful to make sure the hole is large enough because if it is not, the draw of smoke through the cigar can be blocked. Also, as the cigar is smoked, tar can gather near the hole, affecting the taste and the draw.

Cigar Punch

Is there a correct way to light a cigar? Yes, the goal is to light the end as evenly as possible, applying as little of the flame to the end of the cigar as possible. This will prevent the tobacco from getting charred or carbonized, and dispensing an unpleasant taste. To do this, hold the flame 2" from the cigar, and draw long, slow puffs of air through the cigar. The flame should jump to the cigar. Rotate the cigar about a quarter of a turn as you puff. Continue to do this for 4-5 puffs and then inspect your work. If there is an unlit spot, blow on the cigar to accelerate the glowing coal to drift over to the unlit part. Next, take one or two steady puffs and leaving the cigar alone for about 2 minutes as the first 1/8th to 3/16th of ash builds. Now you have laid the perfect foundation of a cigar that will burn properly.
